History of the Company
Vantage Point was formed in 1989 to provide relational database and data mining consulting to corporations embarking on what was then a new software technology. During the first seven years of our existence we provided these services to such companies as American Express, Fidelity Investments, Shearson Lehman Brothers, Metropolitan Life Insurance, First National Bank of Chicago, Sony Music Entertainment and others.

While working in New York we were asked to build a custom practice management system for a medical group in Westchester County, New York that operated five clinics. The group’s 100 physicians cycled through these locations, and had a central administrative office that processed all billing and managed direct contracts with over 30 leading employers in the area.

The system was unique at that time in using a relational database, and client/server architecture running over a distributed ISDN network. It had real-time appointment scheduling across all sites, referral authorization and numerous other features. After developing this system we ported it to Microsoft Windows and then offered it as a large-group, multi-site practice management system to other groups. The system, VP-MED, was sold to Mercy Hospital in Chicago to run all 12 of its outpatient clinics throughout the metropolitan area and provide centralized billing for 120 physicians, and sold to other smaller physician organizations.

By the end of this phase of the company’s growth, Vantage Point reduced its consulting services and moved further into the development of healthcare information systems. We renamed the company to Vantage Point Healthcare Information Systems, Inc. to reflect this. With our strong interest in database optimization, the principals decided to begin development of another healthcare product, this time an analytical system. It would be expressly designed to execute complex, user-defined queries against very large healthcare datasets with very fast retrieval performance. This was something believed to be impossible, especially with an intuitive user interface for non-technical users.

The result was SmartCare®, which was introduced in the late 1990’s. Today Vantage Point continues to expand and refine SmartCare®, being as responsive as possible to our customers. The product is now used to analyze data involving over 3,000,000 patients and 25,000 physicians and facilities nationwide.
